I’ve been listening to jazz for as long as I can remember. In fact, I inherited my love of music from my father. He owned an extensive collection of albums. I remember watching him as he’d carefully remove an album from it’s dust cover and place it gently on the turntable. I’d stand on my tippy toes to watch the magical disc turn round and round, waiting for those first notes of music.
I listened to Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Grover Washington, Joe Sample and Ella Fitzgerald. Yet there was also lots of soul and funk in his collection. The Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Rose Royce, the Emotions, the Commodores, and the Bar-Kays.
My love for music and eclectic musical palette continue to grow. I am always discovering new artists and music. Later this month I am excited about discovering a few jazz artists that are new to me – Kenny Barron, Regina Carter, Kurt Elling, and Russell Malone.
